WINE & CHEESE GROUP
Leader: Michele Cornwell
The aim of the Wine and Cheese Gathering Group is fun and fellowship. It is not for any particular wine person but for all. More a tasting to expand our range with everyone’s views accepted and valued.
We try 3 wines and cheeses over about an hour and a half in a safe environment.
The Gathering takes place on the 2nd Wednesday of each Month from 3:00pm to 4:30pm.
SEE CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR DETAILS.

May 2026

The Wine and Cheese Group met on 13th May at the Secret Harbour home of Joan and David Thomson, where 11 members enjoyed an engaging afternoon of tasting and conversation.
To decide what wines and cheeses to present, David used AI (CoPilot) and asked, “Suggest a wine tasting of 3 wines $30 or less and 3 matching cheeses”. The response was as follows:
1. A dry Reisling (Clare Valley / Great Southern / Eden Valley) with Goat’s cheese
2. Pinot Noir (Tasmania / Yara Valley) with Brie or Camembert
3. Shiraz (Barossa / McLaren Vale / WA) with Aged Cheddar
With the acceptance of the response, the following wines and cheeses were procured:
1. Pikes “Traditionale” Reisling (Clare Valley) with Meredith Dairy Fresh Chevre
2. Tamar Ridge Pinot Noir (Tasmania) with Adelaide Hills Brie
3. Elderton Barossa Shiraz (Barossa Valley) with Maffra Mature Cheddar
Prior to the tasting, David advised that there would be no quiz – a break from tradition.
As each wine was sampled, members were given a brief overview of its region and the history of the winery. To ensure full transparency, it was declared that Joan’s brother Neil and his wife Lorainne founded Elderton wines in 1979. It is now managed by their sons, Cameron and Alister.
A map of Australia highlighting 65 wine regions was an interesting talking point.
The group’s next meeting will be hosted by Dianne and Phil Huband on Wednesday 10th June.
