“Transport Progress in Frieze”
Those of you who missed out on the ‘treat’ last month will have the opportunity to see it this time. It is a beautiful mural titled ‘Transport Progress in Frieze’ made in 1951 by an Italian immigrant Peter Melocco and built by Guido Zuliana and depicting the history of travel in NSW up to 1950. The Frieze is made up of 2 coats of plaster and polished to resemble marble in the Scagliola Fiorentina engraving/carving technique. Having been covered up for many years it was rediscovered following a fire in the building in 2015 and restored in 2017. It was a finalist for the Sulman prize 1951. Also there is a map of Australia on the terrazzo floor with the railway tracks up to 1950’s, state emblems and a compass. The frieze is in the Covenience store and cafe on the Concourse. Well worth a visit.
Register at the meeting or email [email protected].
